Last week, we have talked about what to expect from both the online stem courses which will focus on some basic level micro:bit development using the JavaScript Blocks as well as an intermediate level micro:bit development using MicroPython.
In the introductory sessions, I have shared about some of the most basic features that are available with the micro:bit board itself. Features like the Processor, Compass, Accelerometer, Pins, BLE Antenna, Buttons and LED display.
Plus we also taken a look at the interface of both MakeCode as well as mu-editor. They are the basic tools that we will be using to help create and build some of the exercises and experiments during the stem course itself.
Session 01 - "Blocks With Microbit" and "Code With Microbit"
In our very first session together, we will be taking a look at some basic exercises. The list of exercises will be the same for both the beginner level session as well as the intermediate level session. "Why is that so?", you might be wondering.
As a beginner, if you are interested, you can hop over to the intermediate lessons occasionally to take a look at what is going on. Vice versa, if you are new to programming and sometimes you don't quite understand what the programming code is trying to do, you can always refer back to the MakeCode examples to see what's really going on.
Here are some of the exercises that we will be covering in our first session together this weekend:
Displaying your name across the LED Display
Understand the basic blocks that are available (beginners)
How to perform the basic actions in MicroPython (intermediate)
Working with Inputs - Part I (both for beginners and intermediate level)
Micro:bit Project Showcases, Tutorials & Tips
One of the most important aspects of both courses is about showcasing projects as well as sharing how you can build them yourself. Tutorials will be shared during the online stem courses and I will also be sharing tips and ideas so that you can either continue building on top of it, or you can create your very own projects.
Re-creating the Old Retro Game - Battleship
One of the very first game projects that we will be exploring is this old retro game that I used to play when I was growing up. It's called "Battleship". For some of you reading about this, this is probably before your time. But I think it's fun to just recreate it using micro:bit. Things that you will need include:
2x micro:bit boards
2x :Game Zip 64 Programmable Gamepad
You can get the :Game Zip 64 programmable gamepad from Kitronik's website here: https://www.kitronik.co.uk/5626-game-zip-64-for-the-bbc-microbit.html
Alright, I shall not go into this game idea too much now, but know that we will be discussing more about this project in the coming weeks!
I am also trying to speak to a few other brands to see I can gather more robotics related kits and to showcase some interesting project ideas that we can build together online.
Stay tuned for more guys!
